When I started my private practice I asked God a lot of questions.
“Was this the right time?”
“Why me?”
“Would I be able to actually help people?”
I had some doubts and I wondered what in the world made me qualified to counsel others.
As I prayed God led me to these verses in Isaiah 61:1-3
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, to console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”
In this passage, Isaiah prophesied of the coming of Jesus. Later in Luke 4, we see that Jesus quoted this same scripture at the beginning of his ministry. When I read this it stood out to me that this must have been Jesus’ heart. If it was good enough to describe His earthly ministry then it should be a goal for my counseling ministry.
In the years that followed I began to ask God to use me so that these things could happen in the lives of my clients. It has given me a focus of prayer for my clients and goals for counseling. For more than 20 years it has been an honor and a privilege to walk with people through deep healing. I love being part of their journey.
